An Average Case NP-Complete Graph Coloring Problem

چکیده
NP-complete problems should be hard on some instances but those may be extremely rare. On generic instances many such problems, especially related to random graphs, have been proven easy. We show the intractability of random instances of a graph coloring problem: this graph problem is hard on average unless all NP problem under all samplable (i.e., generatable in polynomial time) distributions are easy. Worst case reductions use special gadgets and typically map instances into a negligible fraction of possible outputs. Ours must output nearly random graphs and avoid any super-polynomial distortion of probabilities. This poses significant technical difficulty.

متن کاملJust chromatic exellence in fuzzy graphs
A fuzzy graph is a symmetric binary fuzzy relation on a fuzzy subset. The concept of fuzzy sets and fuzzy relations was introduced by L.A.Zadeh in 1965cite{zl} and further studiedcite{ka}. It was Rosenfeldcite{ra} who considered fuzzy relations on fuzzy sets and developed the theory of fuzzy graphs in 1975. The concepts of fuzzy trees, blocks, bridges and cut nodes in fuzzy graph has been studi...
متن کاملOptimal approximation of sparse hessians and its equivalence to a graph coloring problem
We consider the problem of approximating the Hessian matrix of a smooth non-linear function using a minimum number of gradient evaluations, particularly in the case that the Hessian has a known, fixed sparsity pattern. We study the class of Direct Methods for this problem, and propose two new ways of classifying Direct Methods. Examples are given that show the relationships among optimal method...
متن کاملThe Bounded Edge Coloring Problem and Offline Crossbar Scheduling
This paper introduces a variant of the classical edge coloring problem in graphs that can be applied to an offline scheduling problem for crossbar switches. We show that the problem is NP-complete, develop three lower bounds bounds on the optimal solution value and evaluate the performance of several approximation algorithms, both analytically and experimentally. We show how to approximate an o...
متن کاملThree Colors Suffice: Conflict-Free Coloring of Planar Graphs
A conflict-free k-coloring of a graph assigns one of k different colors to some of the vertices such that, for every vertex v, there is a color that is assigned to exactly one vertex among v and v’s neighbors. Such colorings have applications in wireless networking, robotics, and geometry, and are well-studied in graph theory. Here we study the natural problem of the conflict-free chromatic num...
